Whether you already own a greenhouse, or you’re planning to build one in the future, you need to know how to keep it in top condition. Greenhouse maintenance isn’t something that most people think much about, but it’s actually extremely important. Let’s take a look at what you need to do in order to keep your greenhouse in good shape.
The first thing to do is to make sure that the main structure of the greenhouse is in good condition. Look where it’s attached to the ground or slab, and make sure there are no weaknesses around the greenhouse base. Allowing the main structure of your greenhouse to deteriorate is a sure way to have it stop working for you! This kind of repair isn’t something you can ignore.
Next, have a look at your glass or plastic. It should all be in place, firmly attached, and undamaged. If you have a cracked pane or a torn layer of plastic, your greenhouse envelope isn’t doing its job as well as it should be. Reglaze or recover this area to prevent outside air from getting into your greenhouse.
Check out the doors, too. They should be functional and seal properly to preserve the greenhouse envelope. If you have hinged doors, make sure they’re well oiled and maintained, so they open easily. Prevent obstructions like potting soil or loose objects from building up around your doors and sweep the area periodically to make sure it’s easy to get in and out.
Once you know that the structure is sound, you’ll want to think about your greenhouse’s ventilation. After all, a completely closed structure will encourage all kinds of problems. Make sure all vents and air ducts work correctly, without air leaks or spaces where rain can get in. If your greenhouse uses shutters or moving louvers, oil and maintain them the same way you would the doors.
Drainage is important, too. Greenhouses may require guttering to make sure that water runs away, instead of causing the greenhouse structure to deteriorate. If you have a wood and glass greenhouse, this is particularly important. Pay close attention to the structure and make sure that rain doesn’t collect on it.
Is your greenhouse clean? If dirt builds up on the windows or plastic, you won’t have an environment that’s as effective as a clean greenhouse provides. Glass should be cleaned with a brush and warm water, ideally once a month. Plastic can be washed using a hose or sprayer, as long as the pressure is low enough that the plastic won’t be damaged. Keeping a greenhouse clean makes it work better.
Limit the insect population around your greenhouse by maintaining the greenery outside, and check all new plants for insects before you bring them inside the greenhouse. Avoid wearing bright colors to keep insects outside, where they belong. This will keep your plants from becoming infested and keep your greenhouse healthy.
