DIY Small Greenhouse Some plant lovers enjoy hobby greenhouses as a way to retain a bit of summer in the dead of winter. These greenhouses may have indoor ponds and boast fabulous specimen plants. Other gardeners, mostly in northern and colder climes, invest in greenhouses as a way to get a jump start on the growing season. These gardeners begin their projects in late February and have sturdy seedlings ready to plant outdoors by mid-spring. If you are interested in building your own small, economical, homemade greenhouse, then consider a cold frame, the smallest greenhouse in the world. Cold Frames and Hot Beds Cold frames are small. Instead of walking into your greenhouse, you will open it up. They are economical because they do not require heat and can be made solely from scavenged material. They have the capacity to hold seedlings and some larger plants but are not large enough for waterscapes. The purpose of the cold frame is to hold and harden your seedlings and transplants. Cold frames with internal heat are hotbeds. Hotbeds are suitable for germination and if left to turn cold serve a dual purpose of hardening older plants. There are a variety of ways to heat a cold frame. The mechanics of heating a hot bed must be incorporated into the design of the mini-greenhouse. Design Picture a box, with your choice of dimensions, constructed with a slight downward slope to catch sunlight and heat; this is a cold frame/hotbed greenhouse. The lid of the box acts as the roof
